Social and Political Activism

  • Adolescent Sexual Health Awareness (ASHA)

    With a focus on community sexual health education outreach, we lead interactive workshops in local high schools about STI’s, safe-sex practices, sexual assault prevention, communication, and other sexual health issues. Other activities include promotion of STI testing for Wesleyan students and members of the community, bringing speakers to campus, and co-programming with other Wesleyan sexual health groups.

    We meet Sundays at 8pm in the OCS Lounge (3rd Floor Allbritton)

  • Ajúa Campos

    Ajùa Campos (AC) is Wesleyan's Latino/a/x student identity and affinity group. We meet weekly to discuss issues, coordinate community outreach initiatives, and plan events pertinent to Wesleyan's Latinx community.

  • Asian American Student Collective (AASC)

    AASC strives to strengthen the voices of Asian Americans through social awareness, progressive action, and political empowerment. We provide an open forum in which issues of identity, race, class, gender and sexuality can be explored and questioned; where stereotypes and structures of oppression can be broken down and examined in relation to Asian America, and where our diverse individual experiences can be placed within a broader historical context.

  • Cardinal Cares
    Cardinal Cares is an organization created to help spread awareness about eating disorders, distorted body image, and negative self-talk. Through this organization, we hope to eliminate some of the negative stigmas that surround eating disorders and mental illness as a whole.
  • Challah for Hunger

    We are Wesleyan's chapter of the national Challah for Hunger association. We get together to make challah and then sell it with the proceeds going to food pantries in the area and across the country. Our goal is to work together, make challah, raise awareness about food insecurity, and help support food pantries.

    Our hourly baking blocks are Thursdays from 4pm-9pm and we sell bread on Fridays from 11am-2pm!

  • Individual Tutoring Program
    This program provides the Middletown community with free personal tutoring. We match up Wesleyan tutors with people of all ages who need help in a certain area or school subject. You can tutor as part of your work study or volunteer. We only ask for at least one hour a week and you don't even have to leave campus as the tutees come to you. Working with Individual Tutoring is a great way to engage with Middletown residents because you can create great one on one relationships and be a part of our greater tutoring community.
  • Jewish Voice for Peace
    Jewish Voice for Peace members are inspired by Jewish tradition to work together for peace, social justice, equality, human rights, respect for international law, and a U.S. foreign policy based on these ideals. JVP opposes anti-Jewish, anti-Muslim, and anti-Arab bigotry and oppression. JVP seeks an end to the Israeli occupation of the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem; security and self-determination for Israelis and Palestinians; a just solution for Palestinian refugees based on principles established in international law; an end to violence against civilians; and peace and justice for all peoples of the Middle East.
  • Journalism of Underrepresented Students
    Our mission is to create a community around journalism and publication for SOC and provide resources for those students. Through activism we plan to bring awareness on the issues that SOC face in journalism, such as the lack of platforms, lack of representations, and lack of resources for students of color.
  • Long Lane Farm

    Long Lane Organic Farm is Wesleyan's student-run organic farm, located at 281 Long Lane. Throughout the year, we grow and sell a variety of vegetables, fruits, herbs, and value-added products. We have a stand at the NEAT Farmer's Market, sell produce to Bon Appetit, and host community events and programs such as PumpkinFest and the Middletown Food Project.

    We have Community Work Day on Saturdays from 10am-2pm at 243 Long Lane and our Collective Meeting on Sundays at 5pm in Boger 110

  • MINDS-Wesleyan

    MINDS-Wesleyan strives to create awareness around mental health in developing countries. Our goal, here at Wesleyan, is to create research projects that we will see be implemented in India. We strive to partner with local community clinics and hospitals in Middletown, CT to host events that advocate for high-quality access to mental health care in developing countries (like rural India). MINDS-Wesleyan will facilitate interested students to go volunteer in India with MINDS, who partners will local health clinics, local schools, and larger hospitals. From this, students will gain hands-on clinical experience necessary for their future health careers.

    We meet on Thursdays at 8pm in ESC 072 Computer Lab!

  • Movers and Shakers
    Movers and Shakers is a coalition that executes direct action and advocacy campaigns for marginalized communities using virtual reality, augmented reality and the creative arts.
  • Multi-Ethnic Interracial Cross-Cultural (MIX Club)

    Our group is unique from similar identity groups, because we do not specify what ethnic identities we are targeting. The group is open to anyone who is interesting in learning about racial and/or cultural diversity. We hope to participate in a MIX conference during spring semester as well as prepare for a MIX week where we will have speakers on the topic. We also hope to work in tandem with other identity groups to come up with projects this semester.

  • Not for Sale

    Not For Sale is founded on a deep-seated desire to put an end to human trafficking in our global community, an issue that preys an estimated 27 million lives. The name "Not for Sale" gets to the heart of our message: no human being should have a price tag or be exploited in inhumane ways. As a community of student activists on campus, we aim to combat human trafficking by educating ourselves and raising awareness, fundraising for relief programs, and volunteering at survivors' recovery centers. Our mission is to transform the lives of trafficked victims and survivors through empowerment, hope, and love. No other club at Wesleyan advocates to end modern slavery.

    Peer Advocates for Working Students (PAWS) aims to educate student workers about their rights as employees of the University and to advocate for their fair treatment.
  • Second Shades
    Second Shades strives to create a community in which students of color have the opportunity to both create and witness stories that reflect their experiences through the art of theater. We aim to produce works written by playwrights of color, and to encourage the casting of actors of color in traditionally white roles to break through the monotony of white voices in Western theater canon and on campus.
  • Students for a Democratic Internet
    Our group's mission is to effectively impact public discourse and policy on data protection and control issues through a variety of measures rooted in education, outreach and advocacy. We hope to engage with the Wesleyan and Middletown communities through public events with a host of different speakers knowledgeable about the issues and willing to help support the club’s interests. We hope to cultivate a community presence and get our message across through publication in both the Wesleyan Argus and Arcadia. We also plan to support local, state, and national legislation that concerns data control and protection through grassroots community efforts.
  • Students for Global Health
    Students for Global Health is a student organization that strives to spread awareness and mobilize change against issues of global health inequity. This organization eventually hopes to establish a GlobeMed chapter, partnering Wesleyan’s campus with community-based organizations in a developing nation.
  • Title IX Student Advisory Committee

    The Title Student Advisory Committee, a student-based committee that advises the Wesleyan Administration on Policy and Education efforts related to Title IX.

    Wesleyan Habitat for Humanity partners with Middlesex Habitat for Humanity to build affordable housing for first-time home owners in the local community as well as to provide renovations to existing homes owned by deserving families.

    We believe that our mission as students living in a free democracy is to promote the cause of justice and speak out against oppression. We will work to educate members of our community specifically about the plight of the Palestinian people, who have been living without basic rights under Israeli military occupation and colonialism since 1948. We will raise awareness about this issue and provide students with an alternative resource of information to the mainstream media.
